The River Wandle rises from springs in Carshalton, and the two ponds at the heart of the village, with All Saints church above them and old flint walls around them, are one of the prettiest corners of south London. Around the ponds are a museum, a water tower with a Georgian bathroom, an Arts and Crafts house and parks that once belonged to grand estates. Minibus hire Carshalton customers book is mostly school trips and weddings, along with school fixtures, family celebrations, the Environmental Fair and airport runs.
Carshalton sits in the middle of Sutton borough, between Sutton town, Wallington, Hackbridge and the St Helier estate, with Carshalton Beeches to the south. From our base in SE1, it's about fifty minutes outside the rush hour, via the A23 or the A24.
Minibus hire Carshalton for school trips
Carshalton is a ready-made history and geography trip. Honeywood Museum, beside the ponds, tells the story of the borough in a house that goes back to the seventeenth century. Carshalton Water Tower, with its rare plunge bath, opens on summer afternoons. Little Holland House, the home that the artist Frank Dickinson built and furnished himself, opens on set days.
Schools from across south London come for local history, river studies on the Wandle and visits to BedZED, the eco-village in Hackbridge. Carshalton's own schools book us for museum visits in central London, swimming, sports fixtures and residential trips. The driver drops near the ponds and returns at the time the teacher sets.
Weddings at All Saints and the parks
All Saints, the medieval church above the ponds, hosts weddings, and the ponds and the old walls make a lovely backdrop for the photographs. Couples also marry at other churches in Carshalton and Wallington, and receptions follow at golf clubs and venues in Surrey.
The minibus collects guests from their homes or a hotel, drops at the church, carries on to the reception and handles the late run home. The roads around the ponds are narrow, with a one-way section and limited stopping, so we'll agree the drop-off by the church and a waiting point nearby. Minibus hire Carshalton couples book often includes a stop by the ponds for photographs on the way.
School fixtures and clubs
Carshalton has a number of secondary schools, including Carshalton Boys Sports College and Carshalton High School for Girls, and many primaries. Teams travel to fixtures across Sutton, Croydon, Merton and Surrey.
The squad, the coaches and the kit travel together in one vehicle, and the driver stays until the final whistle. Local cricket, football, hockey and athletics clubs book us for away fixtures and tournaments too. For a season of matches, we'll follow a set pattern.
The Oaks, Grove Park and the Environmental Fair
The Oaks Park, near Carshalton Beeches, is where the Earl of Derby and his friends dreamed up the Oaks and the Derby in the 1770s, and it now has a café, a garden and open grassland. Grove Park, by the ponds, has the river, waterfalls and a play area. Both suit a school outing or a family picnic. Beddington Park, just east, has the medieval church of St Mary and Carew Manor, and school groups often combine it with a visit to the ponds.
The Carshalton Environmental Fair, held in Carshalton Park on the August bank holiday Monday, draws thousands of visitors. Roads around the park are busy that day, so if you have a booking nearby, tell us and we'll plan around it.
St Helier Hospital and nights out
St Helier Hospital, on the edge of the St Helier estate, is the area's main hospital, and staff book us for nights out, leaving dos and Christmas parties. The site is large and partly being rebuilt, so we'll agree the entrance in advance.
Carshalton High Street and North Street have pubs and restaurants, and the village is a popular spot for a birthday lunch. For a group night out, the driver collects from homes across Carshalton, Wallington and the Beeches and brings everyone home.
Gatwick and the village roads
Gatwick is about thirty-five to forty-five minutes from Carshalton outside the rush hour, via the A217 and the M25 or the A23 and the M23. Heathrow is about forty-five minutes. Stansted and Luton take an hour and a quarter or longer.
The roads around the ponds and the High Street were laid out for a village, and they're narrow, with tight corners and a lot of parked cars. The junction by the ponds, where North Street meets the High Street, is slow at peak times. For pickups in the village, we'll agree a point the vehicle can reach and turn at. Many of the roads in Carshalton Beeches are wide, so home pickups there are usually easier.
