For north-west London, Luton is the easy airport. The M1 starts at Staples Corner, runs straight north, and leaves you at junction 10 a few minutes from the terminal. Families in Barnet, Harrow and Brent often find it closer than Heathrow, and a lot of the budget European flights they'd otherwise take from Stansted go from here too. Most Luton Airport minibus transfers we run start in that corner of London.
Luton Airport minibus transfers from north-west London
From Edgware, Mill Hill or Colindale, the airport is usually around 35 to 45 minutes outside the rush hour. From Harrow or Wembley, about the same. From Golders Green or Finchley, the North Circular to Staples Corner and then the M1 takes a little longer. Staples Corner itself is one of the busiest junctions in north London, and at peak times it's the slowest part of the run.
From central London, it's the A41 or A5 out through north-west London to the M1, or the North Circular from the east. From SE1 and the City, allow about an hour and a quarter at a quiet hour. From south London, it's a long way, and Gatwick or Heathrow is usually the better airport if you have the choice. Junction 10 itself can back up at peak times, with airport traffic meeting local traffic for Luton and Dunstable.
The terminal and the drop-off zone
Luton has one terminal, which keeps the drop-off simple. Road traffic goes straight to it, with a charged drop-off zone in front. The drop-off has a short time limit, so the group needs to be ready to unload quickly. Have passports and phones to hand before the vehicle stops, not buried in a case.
Passengers arriving by train use the DART, a shuttle from Luton Airport Parkway station up to the terminal. That doesn't affect a minibus, but it's useful to know if anyone in the group is coming separately by train.
For collections, minibuses use the official pickup areas or car parks rather than the terminal forecourt. Once you have your bags, ring or text the driver and they'll tell you where to go.
Early flights from Luton
Like Stansted, Luton has a lot of early budget flights to Europe. The terminal fills quickly from about four in the morning, and security queues can build. For a group, that means an early pickup.
For a 6:30am flight, a group from Harrow should aim to be at the terminal by about 4:30, depending on the airline. That means a pickup at around 3:45. The M1 is clear at that hour, so the drive itself is quick.
Smart motorway sections on the M1 near the airport can have lane closures overnight. For the very earliest flights, some families prefer a hotel near the airport the night before. A few sit within walking distance of the terminal. The driver checks the route before setting off.
Coming back into London
The return trip is usually simple. Late-evening arrivals have a clear run down the M1. The busy times are weekday mornings, when the M1 southbound backs up towards Staples Corner and the North Circular, and Friday afternoons, when everyone heading north for the weekend joins the other side.
If the group needs dropping at several addresses on the way home, give us the list when you book. Barnet, Harrow and Brent addresses fit together well on one route. Addresses across the river don't. For those, it can make sense to drop at a central point, such as a station, and let people make their own way for the last part.
Who flies from Luton
Families heading on holiday, golf groups, stag and hen groups off to European cities, and students heading home for the holidays are all common. Luton also has a busy business aviation side, used for private flights. Business travellers use it for short European trips too.
For holiday groups, luggage decides the vehicle. A family of seven with a week's luggage might need a 12-seater. A stag group of twelve with small bags fits a 14 or 16. Tell us the head count and the cases. Students tend to travel heavy at the start and end of term, so allow for that if you're booking a group of them.
Thameslink and the DART, or a minibus
Thameslink trains run from St Pancras to Luton Airport Parkway, where the DART takes passengers up to the terminal. For two people travelling light from central London, it's quick.
For a group from Barnet or Harrow, it's less appealing. Getting to St Pancras first, then onto the train, then onto the DART, then into the terminal, with luggage and children, is several changes too many. A minibus from the door takes one.
For north-west London, Luton usually wins. For east London, Stansted usually does. In between, around Enfield, Haringey and Islington, it's often a toss-up, and the M25 between the two airports can make either work.
If you haven't booked flights yet, compare the drive as well as the fare. A cheap flight from the wrong airport can cost more in time and transport than a slightly dearer one from the right one.
When you book, give us the flight time, every pickup address and the number of large cases. We'll send back the vehicle, the pickup time and the price in writing, so everyone in the group knows the plan.
