Stansted is an early airport. A lot of its flights are budget European routes that leave before seven in the morning, which means a terminal that's packed by five and groups who need to be there before it fills. Stansted minibus transfers are mostly about that early start. Pick the group up in the dark, get up the M11 while it's empty, and arrive with time for the bag drop queue.
Stansted minibus transfers from east and north London
Stansted is in Essex, north-east of London, off junction 8 of the M11. That makes it the natural airport for east London. From Stratford, Walthamstow or Ilford, it's usually around 45 minutes to an hour outside the rush hour. From Romford and Havering, the M25 to junction 27 and then the M11 is often quickest.
From north London, the North Circular to the M11, or the A10 and M25 from Enfield, both work. Barnet and Harrow are further, and Luton can be the better airport from there if you have a choice of flights. From Hackney and Islington, the run is usually just under an hour at a quiet time, via the A12 or the North Circular.
Getting there from central and south London
From the City and SE1, the run usually goes out on the A12 and up the M11. That's about an hour and a quarter at a quiet hour. The A12 out of London is slow at peak times, and the Blackwall Tunnel approach adds time for anyone crossing from the south.
From south-east London, the M25 is often the better route. From Bromley or Bexley, it's round the M25 via the Dartford Crossing, which carries a charge and can queue at busy times. Northbound traffic uses the tunnels. From Greenwich or Lewisham, the Blackwall and Silvertown tunnels both charge a user fee, so the route the driver takes depends on the time and the queues. From Croydon or the south-west, the M25 the other way round is long, so allow at least an hour and a half.
Early flights and how we time them
Stansted's single terminal gets very busy in the early morning, when many flights leave within an hour or two of each other. Security queues can be long, and a group of eight takes longer at bag drop than a couple.
So for a 6am flight, we'd usually want a group at the terminal by around 3:45 to 4am, depending on the airline's advice. From Walthamstow, that means a pickup at about 3am. It sounds brutal. It's the time that means nobody's running for a gate. After security, many of Stansted's gates are reached by a short transit train, which adds a few minutes. The roads are almost empty at that hour, so the drive is quick, but overnight closures on the M11 do happen. The driver checks for them the evening before.
Drop-off and pickup at the terminal
Stansted has a charged drop-off zone close to the terminal. For collections, minibuses use the official pickup areas or car parks rather than the terminal road.
We take your flight number for the return, and the driver checks the landing time before setting off. Evening arrivals from Europe can come in late. Tell us if anyone in the group needs dropping off separately on the way home, so the route makes sense at midnight and nobody ends up doing a tour of east London before bed.
Groups that fly from Stansted
Stag and hen weekends to European cities make up a lot of Stansted traffic, with weekend bags rather than suitcases. Families going on holiday in the school holidays fill the terminal from early on the first Saturday. Business travellers use it for European meetings too, and sports clubs fly out from it for tournaments and training camps abroad, with kit bags to match.
Students head out from Stansted at the start and end of term too, with more luggage than anyone else.
Each group needs a different vehicle. A stag group of fourteen with small bags fits a 16-seater easily. A family of eight with a fortnight's luggage might need a 12-seater. Tell us the head count and the cases, and we'll suggest the size.
For very early flights, some groups prefer a hotel at the airport the night before. A hotel sits right next to the terminal, with more a short drive away. We can drop the group in the evening, after work, and the walk to the terminal in the morning takes a couple of minutes.
It costs a hotel room, but it turns a 3am pickup into a 6pm drop-off, which suits families with small children.
Traffic to watch for
The M11 has a stretch between junctions 6 and 8 where roadworks and closures come and go. The M25 near junction 27 is busy at peak times. The A12 eastbound out of London slows from about 4pm on weekdays. And on Friday afternoons in summer, all of them are busier than you'd like. Coming back, evening arrivals usually have a clear run down the M11, but the approach to the North Circular and the A12 into London can slow down late on a Sunday.
Give us the flight time, the head count and the cases, and we'll work out the pickup time and the vehicle, then send the details in writing.
