Croydon sits on the road to Gatwick, and that shapes most of what people here book. A family from Shirley flying out on a Saturday morning. A team from an office by East Croydon heading for a conference in Lisbon. A wedding party coming back from Spain with more luggage than they left with. Minibus hire Croydon customers ask us for is mostly airport work, with a steady run of corporate trips, school outings and nights out on top.
We're based in SE1, not in Croydon, and we cover the whole borough from there. On a quiet road, central Croydon is around forty-five minutes from our base, and further south, Purley and Coulsdon are a little more.
Gatwick from Croydon
From the middle of Croydon, Gatwick is usually thirty-five to forty-five minutes outside the rush hour. The route is the A23 south through Purley, then the M23 from Hooley down to junction 9 and the airport spur. At 5am that's a clear run. At 8am on a weekday, the stretch through Purley, and the junction at Purley Cross in particular, can add twenty minutes on its own.
Trains are quick too. East Croydon has fast services to Gatwick in around fifteen minutes. For two people with a small case each, that's often the sensible choice. For eight people with holiday luggage, a pushchair and a grandparent, it isn't. A minibus collects everyone from the door and drops them at the right terminal, and nobody has to lug cases up and down station stairs.
For the return, we take the flight number and the driver checks the landing time before setting off from London.
Office teams around East Croydon
Croydon has a large office quarter around East Croydon station, and a lot of companies there book transport for away days, client visits and conferences. Some head into central London. Others go out to venues in Surrey and Kent, which are close from this side of the city.
For corporate bookings, the details matter. A written quote for finance, a pickup point that's legal and close to the office, and a driver who knows that George Street and the roads near the tram stops leave very little room to stop a minibus. We'll agree a pickup on a side road a minute's walk away, rather than on the tram tracks.
Minibus hire Croydon for events and nights out
Fairfield Halls, back open after its refurbishment, brings concerts, comedy and touring shows into the town centre. Boxpark next to East Croydon station is a popular start to a night out. Selhurst Park, home of Crystal Palace, fills the roads to the north of the town on match days.
For a night out, a 16-seater means the group arrives together and goes home together. Plenty of Croydon groups head into central London for the evening rather than staying local, and the run back south late at night is usually clear. Give us every home address in advance and we'll plan the drop-offs, whether that's a loop round Addiscombe and Shirley or a run out to New Addington.
Schools, weddings and family days
Croydon has a large number of schools, and plenty of them book us for trips, fixtures and swimming runs. Museum visits into central London are common, as are days out to Chessington, the coast and Kent.
Weddings are another regular booking, from register office ceremonies in the town to receptions in country venues across the Surrey border. Croydon's position helps here. A venue near Reigate or Dorking can be closer than one in east London.
Covering the rest of the borough
Croydon is a big borough, and the town centre is only part of it. To the north, Thornton Heath has Croydon University Hospital, and staff book us for team events and leaving dos. South Norwood is home to Selhurst Park, so match days change the traffic there. Addiscombe and Shirley are mostly family pickups for airports and days out.
To the south, Purley and Coulsdon sit right on the A23, and for Gatwick they're the closest part of London. Selsdon and Sanderstead are quieter, with more weddings and school runs. New Addington, out on the eastern edge, is linked to the centre by tram but a fair way by road, so allow a little longer for pickups there.
Every one of those areas has its own page, with the details that matter most locally, and minibus hire Croydon bookings from any of them start with the same quote.
Roads to know about
The A23 is the spine of the borough and its slowest road at peak times, especially through Thornton Heath, Croydon town centre and Purley. The A232 crosses from west to east, through Shirley and on to West Wickham. The tram network runs on the street in parts of the town centre, and that limits where any vehicle can stop.
ULEZ covers the whole of Croydon, as it does all of London.
The honest caveat for Croydon is the morning rush. A pickup at 7:30 for a 10am Gatwick flight sounds generous. It isn't, if it's a weekday and the A23 is backed up from Purley Cross. For morning flights in the week, we'll push the pickup earlier than you'd expect.
