Booking a minibus with a driver means one phone call instead of five. Nobody has to hire a vehicle and then hunt for someone with the right licence to drive it. Nobody has to split a group across taxis that turn up ten minutes apart. You tell us the plan, a driver arrives in the right size of vehicle, and they stay with you for as much of the day as you need. That's minibus hire with driver London groups use for everything from a forty-minute airport drop to a twelve-hour wedding.
What the driver actually does
Driving is the obvious part. The rest is less visible, and it's where a good driver earns their keep.
Before the day, the driver checks the route against the time you're travelling, not against how it looks on a map at midnight. They work out where they can legally stop at each pickup. A lot of central London is red route, and a 16-seater sitting on double red lines outside a hotel collects a ticket and blocks a bus lane.
On the day, they keep an eye on flight times and call ahead if traffic is going to make them late. If someone's missing at a pickup, they'll ring the organiser rather than drive off.
Drivers also know what the vehicle can and can't do. A 16-seater won't make some of the turns in the back streets of Bloomsbury or Hampstead, and a good driver routes around them rather than finding out halfway down.
And at the end of a night out, they're sober and they know the way home. The booking doesn't vanish at closing time the way an app car sometimes does.
Compared with booking taxis
For six people, two black cabs might look simpler. Sometimes they are. But two cabs means two fares and two arrival times, and at 5am a cab with four large cases is a squeeze.
Above eight people, a minibus is almost always the cleaner option. Ride-hailing apps can't promise a large vehicle at a set time three weeks from now, and that promise is the one thing a group booking needs. Over a day with several legs, one vehicle that stays with you also saves the waiting around between each pickup.
Then there's luggage. A black cab takes a few cases. A minibus with a couple of spare seats takes the whole group's, loaded once, rather than three cab drivers each looking doubtfully at a golf bag.
Minibus hire with driver London rates, hourly or by the trip
There are two ways to book. By the trip, where you pay for a set run, say Battersea to Gatwick, or Hackney to a wedding venue in Essex and back. Or by time, where the vehicle and driver are yours for a block of hours and go wherever you need within that.
Trip bookings suit airport runs and cruise transfers, anything with a clear start and finish. Time bookings suit days with lots of stops. A corporate roadshow, a tour of London, a hen do moving between venues, or a school visit with a picnic on the way back.
Whichever way you book, the quote comes in writing before you confirm, and it shows what's included.
Waiting time and long days
Plenty of bookings involve the driver waiting. At a wedding they'll wait through the ceremony and the meal. At Twickenham they'll wait through the match. That time is part of the booking and it's priced into the quote, so give us the full plan rather than just the first drop-off.
Drivers' hours are capped by law, both for time behind the wheel and for the total length of the working day. For most days out that's no problem. For a very long day, such as an early start to the coast with a late return, we may plan a longer break at the destination or put a second driver on. Better to sort that at the quoting stage than discover it at 11pm in Margate.
If the driver is waiting for hours somewhere with nothing nearby, a country wedding venue for example, let us know whether there's somewhere for them to sit and eat. Venue coordinators usually sort it in a minute, and it makes for a better-rested driver on the way home.
Where the driver can and can't stop
This is the bit most people don't think about until they're standing on the kerb. London has red routes, bus lanes, school streets that close at the start and end of the school day, and low traffic neighbourhoods with filters a minibus can't get through. Some hotels have a forecourt. Many don't.
So for each pickup we agree a point that's legal and close. Often it's your front door. In Soho or the City it might be a side street a minute's walk away. At stadiums it's usually a set coach and minibus area, which can be further out than you'd like on a big night. If you're being collected from a station, tell us which exit. King's Cross, Liverpool Street and London Bridge all have several, and the walk between them can take longer than the drive. Before arriving, the driver will let you know exactly where they are.
Booking a driver for an unusual day
Not every booking fits a category. A photographer shooting across six London locations in a day. A small film crew moving kit between Leavesden and a location in Hackney. A family visiting three places that mattered to someone they've lost. A care home taking residents to the seaside, with two wheelchairs and a carer for each.
If you can describe the day, we can usually plan it. Call us with the outline and we'll tell you which vehicle fits and what it'll cost.
