8 seater minibus hire London families and small teams book

The size for when a car won't do and a full minibus would be too much. Airport runs, family days and small business teams.

An 8-seater is the vehicle people book when a car won't do and a full minibus would be overkill. Six colleagues and their cases to Heathrow. A family of seven heading to a christening in Surrey with a pushchair and a cake. For 8 seater minibus hire London customers mostly want two things. Room for everyone in one vehicle, and something that feels more like a large car than a bus.

In London, a vehicle carrying up to eight passengers is licensed as a private hire vehicle by Transport for London, under the same system that covers minicabs.

Who books an 8-seater

Families book them a lot, mostly for airport runs and family occasions. Small business teams use them for client visits and site days. And groups of friends book them for an evening out when two cabs would mean splitting up.

Smaller hen parties and birthday groups book them too, along with colleagues heading to a Christmas do who'd rather not wait in a cab queue at midnight in the West End.

Funerals are another. A family travelling together from the house to the service and then on to the wake, without anyone having to drive on a hard day.

They also suit older passengers. The step in is usually lower than on a 16-seater, and there's less of a shuffle to reach the back row.

Luggage in a smaller vehicle

This is where an 8-seater runs out first. With every seat filled, the space behind the last row is limited. That's fine for a night out or a day trip with small bags. It isn't fine for eight people flying long-haul with a large case each.

If you're near the limit, book the next size up. A bigger vehicle with a couple of empty seats is far better than standing on the pavement at 4am deciding whose case stays behind.

Pushchairs need thinking about too. A folded single buggy fits in most rear spaces. A double buggy or a travel system with a carrycot takes a lot more room, and with all eight seats used, it may be one or the other with the cases.

Ski trips are an 8-seater's weak spot. Ski bags, boot bags and big winter coats eat space fast, so for a family ski trip via Gatwick or Heathrow, a 12-seater is usually the right call even for six people.

Golf bags are the other trap. They're long, they don't bend, and four of them take most of the rear space on their own. Mention them at the quoting stage so we can check the space.

8 seater minibus hire London for airport runs

Airport runs are the bread and butter for this size. From central and west London, Heathrow and London City are the common ones. A smaller vehicle is easier at both, and at London City, where the forecourt is compact, it gets in and out faster.

Timing matters more than people expect. For a 6am flight out of Heathrow, a pickup in Fulham at around 3:45 sounds early. It isn't, once you've added bag drop and security for six people and allowed for the odd overnight roadworks closure on the M4.

Gatwick is the other common run for this size, especially from south London. From Croydon or Sutton it's usually under an hour down the A23 and M23 outside the rush. A smaller vehicle makes the drop-off at either terminal quicker, and that helps when the forecourt is busy.

On the way home, we'll take your flight number when you book. The driver checks the landing time before setting off, so a delay doesn't leave anyone waiting at an empty kerb.

Getting into tight spots

Smaller vehicles open up pickups that a 16-seater can't manage. Mews streets in Kensington. Narrow terraces in Islington with cars parked both sides. Cul-de-sacs in the suburbs where a bigger vehicle would need a ten-point turn.

Height can matter too. That's useful at hotels with underground drop-off areas and at some venues and stations.

Days out and evenings

Away from airports, the 8-seater does a lot of small-group days out. A family trip to Chessington or to the Warner Bros. Studio Tour at Leavesden. A birthday lunch in Richmond followed by a walk by the river. The vehicle can wait between stops, so nobody has to plan the day around train times.

On a night out, eight people in one vehicle get home in one go. Nobody is left to find their own way from Clapham to Croydon at 1am, and the driver drops everyone at their own door if the addresses make sense together.

Corporate and executive trips

Plenty of corporate bookings are for an 8-seater, because the group is a handful of people and one of them is the client. A smaller vehicle looks less like a works outing and more like a car service, which is usually the point.

Airport pickups for visiting clients are another regular job. One or two senior people landing at City or Heathrow with a couple of colleagues, where a tidy vehicle and a driver waiting with a name board set the tone for the visit.

For roadshows that visit several sites in a day, it parks more easily and fits into office car parks that won't take a high-roof minibus.

There are times to go up a size, though. Book a 12-seater instead if:

  • every passenger has a large suitcase
  • you're carrying golf bags, bikes or ski bags
  • a passenger uses a wheelchair that doesn't fold
  • the group might grow before the date
  • the trip is longer than about three hours and legroom matters

Questions people ask

Is an 8-seater the same as a large minicab?

In London they're licensed under the same private hire system. The difference is how you book it, with a set vehicle and driver arranged in advance for your group, and waiting time planned into the day if you need it.

Can eight adults travel comfortably for two hours?

Eight adults fit, but the back row is the snuggest. For longer trips, seven passengers in an 8-seater, or eight in a 12-seater, gives everyone more room.

Can an 8-seater use a multi-storey car park?

Tell us about any car park or underground pickup when you book and we'll check it against the vehicle.

Can we keep the 8-seater for the whole day?

Yes. Book it by time rather than by trip, and the vehicle and driver stay with you between stops for the hours you've booked.
