For years, the A23 ran straight through the middle of Coulsdon, and lorries heading for Brighton crawled along the town centre. The relief road built in the 2000s took the through traffic away, and the town has been quieter since. Coulsdon is London's last stop before the North Downs, with chalk grassland on Farthing Downs, the M23 a few minutes south and Epsom Downs racecourse just over the hill. Minibus hire Coulsdon customers book is led by Gatwick runs and race days, along with walks, weddings and school trips.
Coulsdon sits at the southern tip of Croydon borough, between Purley, Old Coulsdon and the Surrey border. From our base in SE1, it's about an hour outside the rush hour, down the A23.
Minibus hire Coulsdon for Gatwick runs
Gatwick is about twenty to thirty minutes from Coulsdon outside the rush hour, via the A23 to Hooley and down the M23. For families flying out, groups of friends and business travellers, a minibus from the door is the quickest way to the airport with luggage.
For departures, tell us the terminal and the flight time, and we'll suggest a pickup. For arrivals, send the flight number and the driver will be at arrivals when the group lands. Heathrow is about forty-five minutes, round the M25. Stansted and Luton are both more than an hour. Minibus hire Coulsdon customers book for a holiday often includes the return leg too, booked at the same time.
Epsom race days
Epsom Downs racecourse, home of the Derby, is about fifteen to twenty minutes from Coulsdon. Derby Day, in early June, is one of the biggest days in the racing year, with huge crowds on the Downs and in the stands. The course also races through the spring, summer and autumn, with evening meetings in the summer.
Racing groups, office parties and stag and hen dos book us for race days. On Derby Day, roads around the Downs close or are controlled, and coaches and minibuses use set parking areas. We'll confirm the arrangements for the meeting and set a meeting point for the return. Allow plenty of time to leave after the last race, because the roads off the Downs are slow. Ladies Day and the summer evening meetings are popular with office and hen groups, and many combine the racing with dinner afterwards in Epsom or Reigate.
Farthing Downs and the North Downs
Farthing Downs, owned by the City of London, is a long ridge of chalk grassland with ancient field systems, Saxon burial mounds and views across Surrey. Happy Valley, below it, has wildflowers and woodland, and the North Downs Way passes nearby. Coulsdon Common and Kenley Common add more open space. The small car park on Downs Road, at the top of Farthing Downs, is the usual drop-off for walking groups.
Walking groups, rambling clubs and schools book us to drop at one point and collect at another. For school geography and science trips, the Downs are a short run from any school in south London.
Weddings in Surrey venues
Coulsdon's churches and the golf clubs and country venues around it host weddings, and many couples hold receptions at venues in Surrey down narrow lanes. A minibus handles the guest runs, from homes or a hotel to the ceremony, on to the reception and back again late in the evening.
For country venues, we'll check the access and the turning space first. Big birthdays and anniversary dinners in Coulsdon and Old Coulsdon work the same way.
Schools, Cane Hill and the town
Coulsdon has several primary and secondary schools, and they book us for museum visits, sports fixtures, swimming and residential trips. Some schools in Old Coulsdon sit up steep hills with tight roads at drop-off times, so we'll agree a pickup inside the grounds where possible. The new homes on the old Cane Hill hospital site, on the hill above the town, have brought many young families, and they book us for birthday parties and airport runs.
Brighton Road, the town's high street, has restaurants, cafés and pubs that suit a family meal. For a night out, the driver collects from homes across Coulsdon, Old Coulsdon and Chipstead and drops everyone back at the end.
The A23, Hooley and race traffic
The relief road keeps through traffic out of the town centre, but the A23 south to Hooley and the M23 junction is still busy at peak times, and an incident on the M23 or the M25 backs up quickly. The lanes up to Old Coulsdon and across to Chipstead are narrow, with tight bends. On Derby Day and other big race meetings, the roads towards Epsom are very slow from late morning, so for any booking that crosses that area, tell us the date.
