Notting Hill on a Saturday morning is a different place from Notting Hill on a Tuesday. Portobello Road fills with market stalls and visitors from all over the world, and the side streets around it pack with people. Then, once a year over the August bank holiday, Carnival takes over the whole area. Minibus hire Notting Hill groups book is shaped by those rhythms, with weddings, private parties, market trips and airport runs, all planned around when the streets are busy.
From our base in SE1, Notting Hill is about thirty to forty minutes outside the rush hour, through Hyde Park Corner and along Bayswater Road.
The area is mostly residential, with long terraces of white and pastel houses, garden squares and mews. That's part of its charm, and part of what makes some pickups tricky for a larger vehicle.
Weddings and private parties
Notting Hill has plenty of weddings, at churches such as St Peter's on Kensington Park Road, at the borough's register office in Chelsea, and at private houses, gardens and restaurants across the area. Receptions often follow in a private room, a members' club or a venue elsewhere in west London.
Private parties are just as common. Big birthdays, anniversaries and family celebrations in homes and restaurants bring guests from across London, and a minibus that collects from a station or a meeting point saves everyone hunting for a parking space.
For weddings, tell us the timings and the addresses, and we'll plan the runs. Many of the streets are narrow, so we'll agree drop-off points in advance.
Minibus hire Notting Hill for Portobello Saturdays
Portobello Road Market runs most days, but Saturday is the big one, with antiques at the Notting Hill Gate end and food and clothes further north. Visitors, tour groups and shopping parties come from all over London and beyond.
For a market trip, the driver drops near Notting Hill Gate or Ladbroke Grove and waits nearby. Portobello Road itself is closed to traffic on market days, and the streets around it are packed, so the pickup is always on the edge.
Antiques groups often want a longer stay, with lunch somewhere along Westbourne Grove and a second look round the arcades in the afternoon. Tell us roughly when you want to leave, and the driver will be back at the agreed corner ten minutes before. If someone buys something bulky, a minibus has room in the back that a black cab doesn't.
Carnival weekend
Notting Hill Carnival, over the August bank holiday Sunday and Monday, is one of the biggest street festivals in Europe. Roads across a large area of Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park close for the weekend, and huge crowds fill the streets.
Groups going to Carnival book us to get there and home. We'll drop outside the closed area and agree a meeting point for the return. If you live inside the area and have a booking that weekend, tell us and we'll plan around the closures.
Carnival runs from late morning into the evening on both days, and the streets clear slowly afterwards. For the return, we agree a meeting point on a main road outside the closed area once we know which side the group will finish on. Allow longer than usual for the walk to it, because the crowds move slowly.
Cinemas, theatres and evenings
The Electric Cinema on Portobello Road and the Coronet near Notting Hill Gate are two of London's best-known cinemas, and the Gate Theatre puts on small productions above a pub. Restaurants and bars along Westbourne Grove and around the Gate draw groups in the evening. Both cinemas are popular for birthday trips, and the Electric's armchairs and sofas make it a favourite for a group outing.
At the end of the night, give us the drop-off addresses and the driver will plan the route home.
Heathrow and the Westway
Notting Hill is close to the Westway, the A40 flyover heading west. Heathrow is about thirty-five to forty-five minutes outside the rush hour, via the A40 and the M25 or the A4. Gatwick is about an hour and a quarter. London City Airport is about forty-five minutes.
For families heading on holiday, a minibus from the door is easier than getting cases down to Notting Hill Gate station.
Mews and narrow streets
Notting Hill's mews and some of its terraces are too narrow for a larger minibus to turn or stop safely. The garden squares often have parking on all sides. The thing to know about minibus hire Notting Hill residents book for a home pickup is that the vehicle may need to stop at the end of the street rather than the front door. When you book, we'll look at the street and agree the closest spot the vehicle can reach.
